Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is the second Fatal Frame game from Tecmo. Like the first Fatal Frame, you will battle ghosts, mostly. The game has some really creepy places to explore and you'll battle all sorts of ghosts. It will feel a little familiar to the first game. The Camera Obscura will once again be your weapon against ghosts. This camera can be improved by using spirit orbs you find throughout the game.

The game follows to young girls, Mio and Mayu, which are twins. Most of the time you will control Mio. There are little parts will Mayu. The game starts when Mio and Mayu are in a forest of their childhood. Some time before, Mayu broke her ankle when they were running when they were younger. After a few minutes Mayu goes alone without Mio noticing and at a point Mio realized that she had lost her sister and the way. They find a village, which is clearly deserted. But some creepy things seem to happen there. Along the game you will find many books or memos which will help you or give you hints. Also they give you a general description of the person or something. One of them says that the village has disappeared during a festival and who ever got trapped in this village will stay there forever. The village seems a quiet place, but the quieter they are, the more scary they should be. The girls find the camera obscura which can see things that humans cannot see, like ghosts. You won't be stuck in only one house. There are many creepy houses to explore. Nothing is really straightforward in this game. In the game there is a bar, near your health, which when goes red, there is a ghost that will attack you. When blue, that means that you're not gonna be attacked. In sometimes means that you have to take a picture of it. This might make another place in the picture appear. Then you just have to find that place and take a picture of it. Normally sealed doors, break this way. Sometimes, it also shows you that a ghost is nearby. He won't attack you, but if you snap a shot of him walking, or standing, you will obtain points. If you get to close to these, they might disappear. This normally appears in a blue circle. There are some of them that you have to snap a shot and even if you get to close, they won't go unless you snap a picture of them. They usually give you something like diaries or information.

You'll see alot of crimson butterflies in the game

Ghosts normally appear alone or in 2. When the little bar near the health becomes red, that means that a ghost has spotted you and he's coming after you. It's not worth it running away since, in houses especially when going out of a room, the game will normally tells you that it's sealed with some powerful force. Well, it's not worth it since ghosts might carry some items like memos or stuff that you can listen from your radio. In battle you have to snap pictures of the ghost until his health it zero. There are types of different films, like type 90, type 16, type 14, type 7 and type zero which is the most powerful and most rare. Type 7 is unlimited and but others are limited. You can find films in drawers or on the floor in houses. It will be a shiny thing. You will definitely notice it, 'cos it will be big. You won't only find types of films, but you might also find herbal medicine, sacred water or stone mirror. Since there is no shop in the game you will have to find them. Herbal medicine recovers little health, but the sacred water recovers all your health. These should be unlimited. Unlike the stone mirror which you can only one. This revives you immediately when you're dead.

Returning to battle, you can't just snap a shot and the ghost's gone. There is the 'Fatal Frame'. When the circle of the camera becomes red, that means you have a fatal frame. Still you have to be fast and close to a ghost to make the fatal frame appears. It's a little risk. If you get close and miss the fatal frame, a ghost will grab you and lowers your health. The stronger your film is, the more damage you will inflict on the ghost. Even without the fatal frame you can still damage the ghost but not much. Fatal Frame normally gives over 60 damage and without it, it's lower than 30, at first. Throughout the game you will gain parts of the camera, which using the spirit orbs you can use them. Spirit Orbs are found near other stuff normally like memos and letters. Letter or reading stuff will make you know about people who were here before you and what they wrote. Sometimes, some of them might help you solve a puzzle or tell you were you have to go next. Some ghosts should be so hard since they are slow, but little ghosts can be a pain. First of all they are fast and this is worse when they are in 2. Ghosts don't always appear in big rooms. You might find yourself in a corner or in a tight corridor. This might be annoying since they exit from the wall. But fortunately if you get used to use the little bar, it indicates the direction the ghost is going to come out from.

The game might give a repetitive feel since you will go through the same rooms more than a dozen of times. Even ghosts might look the same and feel the same. When outside in the village, get used it will be night. It looks scary and maybe a ghost will appear. The houses outside look small, but they aren't. It might take you an hour to explore a single house. Still houses from outside may look linear and boring, but they might bring you creeps. You can save at a red lantern. You can find them in rooms and there are 2 outside in the village. It has to be lit in order to save. When not lit, there is probably a ghost or a seal or something. There is also a character which you really help you in need.

The story may be a little boring at first but gets really exciting later on. The game is filled with puzzles and riddles. Unfortunately the game doesn't say much of what you have to do. This might add useless walking and repetitive actions. Still it can be fun to explore creepy rooms and meet ghosts. Graphically, Fatal Frame II is fantastic. Frame rate never struggles throughout all the game, Graphics are clear enough to see. Cutscenes are superb and there are quiet a lot of them. Sound is better. Voice acting is great but there isn't much sound in the game. There may be a little somewhere but not much. You will often hear you footsteps and fallen things. Still this is what makes a game creepy and exciting. Controls aren't that excellent. Might be confusing at first. You will run by using the square button. The game uses analog sticks and you have to keep it up to move even if you are facing downwards. This takes time, mostly when you're not used to this kind. The game might not seem very scary at first, but after the few hours you will hear more creepy sounds and ghosts will appear more often and the areas become bigger. The camera is upgradeable and helps you defeat ghosts faster.

Fatal Frame II is not so long. Can be finished in mostly 12 to 15 hours, including missions. There are also some harder modes and extras to be unlocked after beating the game once, on easy mode. On other mode will give you more items to unlock. On harder levels, ghosts will become tougher and appear more frequent, might also appear in more than 2. You will have less recovery items. For me, beating the game once is enough. No need to do other difficulties.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly isn't a difficulty horror game, but its tense action will keep you at the edge of your seat. If you're a fan of horror games, you have to buy this. It may not feature shooting zombies like Resident Evil or killing enemies and blood, but it's dark atmosphere and creepy places will satisfy newcomers. It may not be some different from the first Fatal Frame, but it's a really enjoyable game.
